Adidas actually had plans to make these shoes available to the public. Yes, those are shackles on them. This is just in bad taste. What designer thought this was a good idea. Black Sports Online thinks that they weren’t thinking about slavery or holding minorities down when they designed the shoe and I agree with him. I have a feeling some shoe designer will lose his job for this one.
Adidas had this to say on their design:
The design of the JS Roundhouse Mid is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott’s outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery. Jeremy Scott is renowned as a designer whose style is quirky and lighthearted … Any suggestion that this is linked to slavery is untruthful.
Later they withdrew their design and with this media release:
Adidas on ‘shackles’: We apologize if people are offended by the design & we are withdrawing our plans to make them available
Smart move by their public relations department to remove them but they never should have been made in the first place. Even as a Caucasian male, I wouldn’t want some handcuff on my shoe. It serves no purpose and makes you look like an idiot.
